Route distance:
7-20km | 1-2 hours
Surrounds:
Takbok is ideal for those wanting a day of fun 4x4ing close to Cape Town. Just a few minutes drive from the town of Paarl, Takbok offers a variety of different types of obstacles over two routes.
The trail:
It starts with a kind of obstacle course offering mainly sand driving and then leads onto a series of cross-axles, cambers and other testing obstacles. After that the trail heads for the mountains, offering a more natural drive with views across the surrounding farmlands and ever mushrooming golf estates! There are some lovely steep climbs over loose surfaces and one particularly challenging descent. This has been patched up of late with cement to keep it from becoming dangerous. It makes sense to spend some time on the lower track honing those driving skills before setting off to tackle the mountain trail. Novices will find this especially useful. While there are plenty of challenging obstacles around, there are also enough easier ones to allow the less experienced to get to know the ropes and learn how to handle their vehicles. There is some wildlife about and the birdlife sufficient to keep the twitchers happy.
Accommodation:
A lovely lapa has been built at the dam, making it an ideal place for corporate functions, team building or club outings. Owner Paul Roux can also arrange catering here if required. This facility has a bar, dining area, deck overlooking the dam and a large central indoor braai.
Camping:
There isn't an official campsite, but overnight camping can be arranged.
