I will be going down to Uvongo from JHB in April and wanted to take the route less travelled. Have you guys ever done an article on JHB to Durbs off-road, or at least off the beaten track? If so, I would appreciate it if you could direct me to the issue and I will purchase the back issue. If not, do you think it will be as easy as punching in “avoid toll roads” and highways into the GPS? Any advice will be appreciated.

We haven’t, but I can at

We haven’t, but I can at least recommend the old Durbs road to you. It’s not gravel but still quite scenic in parts. At Heidelberg you turn left to Balfour (R23, the turn of is really past Heidelberg – it will say Balfour/Standerton). Then you go Balfour, Greylingstad, Standerton, Volksrust, Newcastle, Ladysmith  - where you join the N3 again. But then you can seek out the Midlands Meander, which is another lekker route almost up to Pietermaritzburg.

Thanks Albertus, think I will

Thanks Albertus, think I will base the trip on your route suggestion and try to get on to gravel whenever possible.

It was actually your story on the mission at Richenau that prompted this frolic. Regardless of how I get there you can bet I am retracing the authors route and coming home through Lesotho!

And herewith the obligatory “thanks for the great mag, keep up the good work” conclusion.
