We are a Norwegian family of four who are going to Krüger 19-25 February 2010. We are arriving and departing from OR Tambo, JHB, and would prefer pick up at the airport.
I'd appreciate any tips on where to rent a Totyota Fortuner or Land Cruiser.
We will stay at the main restcamps (from Berg-en-Dal to Letaba), so we do not need any equipment or camping gear.

I can tell you what not to do...
We recently drove our Defender (without any problem) from Joburg to Utrecht, Holland. We had friends joining us for the first part of the trip. Lots of fun on Huntersroad.
They had to rent a Landy in SA, so a deal was made with Just done It 4x4 Rental, with Mike. The car was in desperate need of new tires, so they agreed to replace the tires in exchange for a refund later.
So they did.
That was 5 months ago and despite a lot of mails, still no money back!!
Has anyone else had any experience with this company or with a case like this so we know how to handle this in SA?
Please help
Tim Fennis

Hi Tim,
My wife and I recently hired a landy from this outfit. The vehicle arrived at my hotel on time and the driver immediately drew my attention to the terribly worn tyres. He then asked us to replace the tyres enroute, when we refused he took the vehicle away and returned several hours later having changed one of the spares with an incorrectly sized tyre. As we were already desperately late we reluctantly accepted the vehicle. We later discovered that the handbrake didn't work and that several pieces of equipment were broken. On complaining to the company I was told by Mike Rideout that it was the fault of staff in Joburg who he has since dismissed. I strongly suspect that this is a scam. Tourists are given vehicles in such poor condition that they feel that they must do something for their own safety. The company gets your rental money + free maintenance.

HI TIM,
SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH! I'M FRENCH!!
So i was in south africa between the 10th of May and the 8th of June 2010... and unfortunatly i used the same rental as you the famous "JUST DONE IT " Like you I had lot of problems with the car as you (starter miss connection, no cooling liquid, no engine oil, no transfer box oil (with leak for both of them) nothing to take of the wheel, very old diesel filters ...... same as you i think ?
MIKE RIDEOUT said he would give all the money back for the reparations about R12 500 RANDS. I sent him a mail and the invoices but until this day, no answer. I'm preparing a nice folder for him. Could you send me more information about your story. If the way i follow works for me i will give you all the informations to take the same action and get your money back .
Best regards
PHIL.

It is quite sad to see all these negative comments about my younger brother, Mike Rideout. Sadly he was killed on Oct 23rd while taking a vehicle from Cape Town to Malawi so that it would be ready for a hire. What you probably do not know is that he had previously been seriously injured in a horse riding accident back in June 2006 when he was thrown onto the road and fractured his skull. Despite four days in a coma he recovered, but was not really quite the same afterwards. He recognised that he could no longer cope with the very stressful and demanding 4x4 business, so it had in fact been up for sale for quite a long time. The recession meant it was a very difficult time to sell a company. However when he died the business was in fact at last getting close to being sold, which would have allowed him to concentrate on his own health and his wife Travis and three young children. Although he did not want to make the trip to Malawi, nobody else was available on the day and as always Mike stepped into the breach. He ran off the road and hit a large tree just outside Windhoek for reasons unknown.
When I say stressful, then that is the way it seemed to me - try getting a call at 6pm on a Saturday from somebody outside Upington who tells you he has just rolled your new LandRover on a straight tarred road with no traffic and who is demanding an immediate replacement!

Ok, what about if you are looking for a 4x4 vehicle in East Africa for a Tanzania safari or something? Anyone got any model suggestions you can get in Eastern Africa? Thanks

Unfortunatley I have no answer but was wondering if you have been successful as I have a similar request for hire but not same period.
