Hi!

We are planning a trip through Lesotho over Sani Pass and down to Koffiebay during May 2011. However, I am worried about the varied reports on the conditions of the roads from Aliwal North through Maseru to the Kgatse dam, and then over Sani Pass.

Can you please assist me where to find such a report?

Kind Regards

Theuns

I just drove the road between Katse and Maseru and in dry conditions, you should be fine even in a 4x2 vehicle with some ground clearance. I saw many taxi’s and Corollas on the road between Thaba Tseka en Katse even when it had been raining for two weeks...

The road between Maseru and Thaba Tseka is one long mountain pass but mostly tar, and the gravel part is normal gravel road.

My plan was also to drive from Katse to Sani over Thaba Tseka, but the Senqu river was in flood at the time and we couldn’t get through. As far as I know, you should be fine in most 4x4 vehicles. It is certainly the most accessible route. If you take any other routes make sure that you are well equiped for recovery, travel with more than one vehicle and have Tracks4Africa maps on your Garmin.

Hi Theuns,

We published a reader’s story about the road conditions in Lesotho in the December issue of Drive Out. You can find the article online here: Lesotho: Some Costly Lessons.
As you will read in the article, it seems that the roads are hazardous during the rain season. For a more positive experience with the same road, you can read this article: Lesotho: Alternate Sides. It depends on the weather and rain conditions, so you might want to work that into your planning.

I hope that helps
