Spring is here and someone forgot to tell the weatherman.
It’s pouring outside.
Not that I’m complaining mind you, because we all know once the rain stops, the wind takes over… and keeps on going until more or less the end of January.
Yip, the south-easter. The real reason why the only Capetonians in Cape Town over the December holidays are speed cops, shop owners and lazy waiters?
The rest of us flee for sanities sake.
Some seek the peace and quiet of the West Coast, which is fine if you’re a grown-up, but not so great if you’re a teenager.
An acquaintance of mine told me the other day, how as a child, she and her family would go to the West Coast every December holiday, year after year, without fail. She never even knew warm water oceans existed until half way through high school.
I thought of her again a few weeks ago, when I briefly visited the Kruger National Park. I sat watching queues of restless teenagers pass, who guaranteed are going to feel the same way about the Park as my friend feels about the West Coast.
As for me, I’m making plans for my escape. Maybe I’ll skirt the back of the Cederberg, through Wupperthal and on to Clanwilliam. Or maybe I’ll leave a long and dusty trail on the R355 to Calvinia, through the heart of the Hantam-Karoo.
In the end, it doesn’t really matter where I go as long as I escape... the wind…
Oh, and before I forget, happy spring day to you to!
