Zebraskop

Zebraskop Private Reserve is a family-run operation managed by Ella and Gert Laubscher and their son Coetzee. The land has been in the family for generations and until recently was used primarily for vineyard, ostrich and boer goat operations. The reserve of 4 000 ha is situated 33 km southwest of Oudtshoorn.
A rich mountain kingdom, it runs all the way up to the top of the Outeniqua mountain range, bordered in the south by the Attaquaskloof Nature Reserve, with the Gamkaberg Nature Reserve close by in the northwest.
The reserve is intrinsically tied in with the history of the area. The historical Attaquaskloof Ox-wagon Trail runs across this land.
Upon arrival and after completing the formalities, guests receive a clearly-marked map of the area. For those who are more digitally inclined, the trail is also loaded on T4A.
The first drive, the unforgiving 40 km Bonthuis Trail, runs from the farmhouse past some historical buildings and then up to the mountains. Bonthuis Trail is only accessible to 4x4 vehicles with good ground clearance, and low-range. Diff lock would not go amiss. Graded 3-4, it demands some experience. Some sections are very steep, with tight turns that often require reverse gear and a repeat attempt, depending on the turning circle of the vehicle.
The track up is narrow, with nowhere to turn around for long distances. You climb higher and higher up the mountain on a demanding track. However, if you remain focused, you will make it to the panoramic view from the top. It takes 3-4 hours to complete the Bonthuis Trail.
The softroader-friendly Kudu Trail is more scenic and laid-back. It traces the farm boundary across the mountains en route to its plateau playground. The track has a grading of 2-3.
Some 30 km in length, it should take 2-3 hours to complete, depending on the number of stops.
Game on this stretch is prolific and quite accustomed to vehicles, which makes them easy to photograph.
