Surrounds:
Soetendalspoort might be a bit far from the major cities, but it's certainly worth visiting if you are fascinated by the wide open spaces of the Karoo, the clear skies, the brightest stars and the silence you will only find in the Karoo.
The trail:
We suggest at least three days if you want to do all the trails. Four of the five trails are circular routes. The Geelpoort Trail with its interesting lichen-covered rock formations winds through the narrow Geelpoort and takes you to a lookout point at the top of the mountain. Here you will enjoy stunning views over the plains of the Great Karoo and see Beaufort West and the mountains between Aberdeen and Graaff-Reinet in the distance. A steep decent will test your downhill driving skills. The trails wind through typical Karoo veld and offer good challenges that will suit novices and shouldn't damage vehicles. Passengers will enjoy the abundance and diversity of flora with the incredible variety of Karoo succulents.
You can drive for many kilometres in the sandy Traka River bed, and might be lucky enough to spot kudu. Look out for wet spots, which might seem llike a firm surface. If it is approached too slowly, you might end up getting stuck and an unexpected recovery will keep you busy for a while. Due to the fast-growing thorn trees, it would be wise to bring pruning scissors to cut branches that might scratch your vehicle.
Full review to follow.
Accommodation:
Blydefontein Tented Camp: Don't bother to bring a tent or bedding for this one - they are all there waiting for you! The camp is situated in an old river bed surrounded by shady Karoo bush. It consists of three chopper tents, each with two comfortable single beds. There are three larger (military type) tents, sleeping up to ten each on mattresses, ideal for groups and especially for children. The tents have solar powered lighting and hot water showers powered by a "donkey" boiler. The toilets are long drop.
There is a fully equipped kitchen for your cooking needs as well as braai facilities.
Camping:
Before you tackle any of the trails, the owners will accompany you to the Donga Campsite at the foot of the Witteberg, 6km away. The name says it all: a deep donga serves as a natural shelter against wind, and old thorn trees provide shade for the tents. Water comes from a nearby cement dam. If you are sensitive about water quality, bring your own water for consumption, or get water at the homestead. User stories
