Route distance:
12.5km | 2-5 hours
Surrounds:
Cape fynbos, lovely indigenous forest and incredible ocean views. More of a scenic nature trail than a challenging 4x4 trail, it is definitely worth a visit for the breathtaking views and the rich diversity of fynbos alone.
The trail:
An undemanding 12km trail starts with a sandy track that travels through alien bush, mainly rooikrans, from where it soon clears out into the open planes of Cape fynbos. Although an alternative to this section is being planned, this demonstrates the devastating effect that these alien species have on the environment. This section is however short enough not to do injustice to the rest of the trail. A steep descent leads to the lowest point of the trail at 186 metres. Ample parking-space is available at this spot and it is an absolute must to get out and explore the mountain slopes covered in flowers and fynbos. One should always be aware of puff adders when walking in the veld, as these snakes are common around here, especially during summer. Die hard 4x4'ers can test their mud-driving skills by crossing the river stream slightly to the left of the parking area, but make sure you are equipped to do a recovery as cellphone signal is unreliable.
Accommodation:
De Uijlenes, a self-catering lodge nearby, offers both camping and accommodation for up to 50 people. Contact Aletta Groenewald on 028 388 0551. At Franskraal, only 10km away, is a luxurious beach house with stunning ocean views to rent.
Camping:
Annie-se-Bos provides basic camping facilities for a maximum of 8 vehicles. Ample water and firewood are available. There is a chemical toilet, but no showers.
