101 Trail Guide | 2010

Matroosberg 4x4 Trail

The Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve is situated on the farm Erfdeel, 35 km from Ceres. It is set in more than 1 000 ha of pristine mountain terrain and offers a number of trails.
The reserve is radically altered by the seasons. In winter, heavy snow turns everything white, and a 4x4 drive in these conditions is a challenging experience.
The main trail has an average degree of difficulty and takes you up to 2 240 m above sea level.
The turning point is right at the Matroosberg Peak – at 2 249 m the highest in the Boland – offering views over the Groothoekkloof Canyon.
The peak attracts skiers, snowboarders, hikers, mountain bikers and pony trekkers, with popularity peaking with the first snowfalls of winter.
Those without 4x4s are also welcome on the main trail, as three ex-army Bedford trucks (fitted with padded seats) drive visitors up and down the mountain daily.
The more challenging secondary trail follows a 7 km circular route on top of the mountain that takes you past spectacular rock formations. Alternative escape routes are available for the more difficult sections, so even novice drivers can give it a try. There is also a 4x2 trail leading to rock pools where you can swim, a challenging 4x4 trail along the riverbed and a 4x4 practise area and obstacle course.
Permits can be obtained at the reserve, and camping is allowed on the trail. Vehicles are allowed entry without prior reservation, starting at daybreak. Allow 6 hours for the drive, and at least one more to enjoy the view from different vantage points. The total distance is 30 km.
